We have a set of videos that will be posted in a few weeks that show the tables turned... where Barbara is the master and Larry is the... well, I shan't spoil it.

Re: How Did This Slip Past the Censors?

There was a lot going on in the 60's with regards to censorship - much of it confusing and self-deprecating. A large portion of what you see in the 60's sitcoms (check out the Munsters, Gilligan's Island, even Batman and F-Troop). Racism, sexism and thinly-veiled sexual innuendo abound. To figure out what was going on, its probably important to separate the gaffs you've noticed into two camps: cultural and societal ignorance (racism and sexism) from censorship (sexual innuendo and sponsor-baiting, which is really all the censorship board cared about). What the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour got cancelled for had nothing to do with sexual innuendo, it had to do with sponsor-baiting. Tom and Dick Smothers (and - let's not forget, writers Steve Martin, Mason Williams, and the brilliant Bob Einstein, among others) wrote and acting material that not just promoted racial/sexual equality and the US's foreign policy (most notably our involvement in Vietnam), but ridiculed people, government institutions, and (this is the important part) SPONSORS that supported the status quo in the US....*by name.* It's that last part that got them tossed off the network - and, I've loved the brothers Smother ever sense.

We forget how much times have not only changed, but have been altered forever, because of people like the crew of the Smothers Brothers show - and they weren't alone: Rod Serling's Twilight Zone had a pretty profound episode or two (check out the episode with George Takei that was banned after a single airing because it chose to show the US as the aggressors in the WW2). Now, with the exception of 5 of the Carlin 7 Dirty Words, you can pretty much say/do what you'd like on network television - ok, not completely, but you get my drift.

As to the navel thing on Beverly Hillbillies? Think of the CBS censors like the folks who admit apps into the Apple app store - hey, occasionally something slips through. I suspect that it just wasn't caught since it wasn't a weekly occurrence as it would have been on I Dream of Jeanne. (Although they seemed fine with an blonde/blue-eyed Arab girl, and an uptight white guy she calls "Master" keeping her in a bottle.)

Re: If You Thought SyFy was Bad...

Such a brilliant genius should invent a better wheelchair...

Re: The Dwacon® Blog: Honest Men Still Exist!

Be assured that I didn't do any figurin' in my head, and I wouldn't be surprised if those numbers were way off.

Re: The Dwacon® Blog: Honest Men Still Exist!

All those numbers... For 1% of a million people is 10,000 while 1% of a billion people is 10,000,000, but having 990,000,000 more dishonest people around greatly overshadows having 9,990,000 more honest people.

Re: True Story?

I sadly had many similar encounters... so perhaps jot it down as a cautionary tale?

Re: True Story?

It sounds like a fictitious story, but it is a really good one!

Re: It’ll Tickle Your Innards

Hmm...

Re: It’ll Tickle Your Innards

Hmm, evidently my memory is corrupted. I loved his character--both in this show and in Spencer For Hire. Althought, I liked the character he played on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine even better. In fact, if I had my choice of who I would prefer to serve under of the Star Trek captains, Captain Sisko edges out Captain Picard because of having a better sense of humor.

Re: Obama Kick Ass Song

The fingers are faster than the brain at times... :^[

Re: Obama Kick Ass Song

Ill take some Canadian Dwacon please....

Re: Obama Kick Ass Song

This hilarious bit of what? As far back as 20 years, he had a serious addiction to porn. She divorced him, but it was a very ugly divorce. He had other attorneys from SEC threatening her and she came close to losing her children when she refused to let him take them for visits. The children were exposed to porno, since he could not go a minute without watching it.
I pray he is one of those caught. I wish I knew how to make sure.
So, this problem goes back many years.

Re: SEC + SEX = Two Wrongs...
